Brian Nelson is a litigation attorney in Hellmuth & Johnson’s commercial, class action, insurance, and complex litigation practice groups. Brian’s practice focuses on fighting for individuals, homeowners, homeowners’ associations, and small businesses in complex litigation, including construction defect, mass tort, product liability, anti-trust, consumer protection, and unfair competition. He has played a vital role in securing substantial verdicts and settlements in a variety of cases. Brian’s diligence in all facets of litigation–including discovery, motion practice, negotiation, arbitration, and trial–enable him to deliver positive outcomes for clients. Brian’s easy-to-talk-to demeanor not only makes his clients feel comfortable but enables judges and juries to quickly gain a sense of trust and easily understand complex issues in all types of cases.
Clients rely on Brian’s experience gained through working in a variety of practice areas. Brian began his legal career working in the county prosecutor’s office enforcing criminal matters in state court. Brian also clerked for judges, gaining valuable experience in seeing how Court’s make decisions and manage cases through all stages of litigation. In the private sector, Brian gained experience representing insurance companies in first party disputes, construction defect litigation, and policy coverage disputes. Since then, Brian has worked in the fields of construction litigation, first-party insurance and coverage litigation, and shareholder disputes.
Currently, Brian spends most of his career representing clients in complex commercial and class action litigation, including consumer fraud, deceptive trade practices, anti-trust violations, and product liability. Brian understands how important it is to keep businesses accountable for maintaining fair and ethical practices and values each client who is willing to pursue justice in these matters.
Brian has been recognized on the Minnesota Super Lawyers Rising Star® List from 2017-2025, and the Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch® in America list from 2023-2025.
In addition to his law practice, Brian is a proud husband and father to two wonderful children. He enjoys coaching high school mock trial, playing hockey, golf, and spending time outdoors with his family.
