Nicklaus earned a B.A. in Economics and Political Science, summa cum laude, from St. Olaf College. He then earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of St. Thomas School of Law. In law school, he worked for Hellmuth & Johnson as a law clerk, served as a Senior Editor on the University of St. Thomas Law Journal, and was a legal extern for a judge on the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
